What is a Ballistic Coefficient (BC)?
The Ballistic Coefficient (BC) is a measure of a bullet’s ability to overcome air resistance in flight. A higher BC indicates the bullet retains velocity better and is less affected by wind. BC values are typically provided by bullet manufacturers and range from about 0.200 for short-range bullets to over 0.700 for long-range precision projectiles. G1 is the most common drag model used.
What’s the difference between MOA and MIL adjustments?
MOA (Minute of Angle) and MIL (Milliradian) are angular measurement systems used for scope adjustments. 1 MOA equals approximately 1.047 inches at 100 yards, while 1 MIL equals 3.6 inches at 100 yards. Most American hunting scopes use MOA, while tactical and military scopes often use MIL. Our calculator provides both so you can use whichever matches your optic.
How do I measure scope height above bore?
Scope height is measured from the center of the rifle bore to the center of the scope’s objective lens. For most standard mounts, this is typically 1.5″ to 1.6″. High mounts may be 1.75″ to 2.0″ or more. You can measure this directly with a ruler or caliper, or check your scope mount manufacturer’s specifications for precise measurements.
How does wind direction affect my shot?
Wind direction is expressed using clock positions. A 3 or 9 o’clock wind (directly from the side) has “full value” and causes maximum drift. Winds from 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, or 11 o’clock have “half value.” Winds from 12 or 6 o’clock (head-on or from behind) have minimal effect on horizontal drift but can slightly affect trajectory and velocity.
How accurate is this calculator?
